Study: Alcoholism Delays Marriage, Hastens Divorce

A new study points to a strong connection between alcoholism and both the timing and longevity of marriage. The results of the study, published in the April 2010 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, are based on the experiences of over 5,000 Australian twins, who were recruited by researchers in the early 1980s. The twins were assessed for the physical and psychological impacts of alcohol use. Researchers also noted the age of first marriage and age of separation from the marriage.

Mary Waldron, a professor at the Indiana University School of Education and the study’s lead author, says the findings show a clear association between alcohol dependence and delayed marriage, as well as early separation and divorce. Though the connection between marital status and alcoholism is well documented, the study offers new insight into the relationship between drinking and the timing of marriage.
