An Overview of Marijuana Addiction

Derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant, marijuana is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States.  Although there has been a great deal of controversy over whether or not marijuana is addictive, it has largely been accepted by national health organizations that regular use can lead to addiction.  The active chemical agent that individuals can become addicted to is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.  Regardless of the controversy, if an individual continues to use the drug despite negative consequences, it is considered an addiction.  Research suggests that 9% of users become addicted, and significant psychological and physical impairments have been attributed to marijuana addiction.

Effects on the brain

Marijuana use has been shown to impact cognitive skills, problem solving, learning and memory.  Research indicates that diminished learning and memory levels can last from days to weeks after consumption of the drug.  Individuals who use marijuana on a regular basis may chronically show reduced cognitive capacities.

Effects on the heart

Marijuana increases the heart rate by 20 to 100 percent, and consequently, increases the risk of heart attack during the time of intoxication.  Individuals often report arrhythmias and palpitations.

Effects on the lungs

Marijuana smoke contains more carcinogens than cigarette smoke.  Marijuana use is associated with higher risks of lung cancer and respiratory illnesses.

Signs of marijuana addiction

The greatest indicator of addiction to marijuana is repetitive use, regardless of negative psychological and physical effects.  The following list outlines the more common signs of marijuana addiction:

  • Increased tolerance or requiring more of the drug to produce the same high.
  • Unable to cut down or stop use.
  • Withdrawal from professional and social activities.
  • Reduced motivation.
  • Feelings of depression, anxiety or anger.
  • Using marijuana to escape problems.
  • Depending on marijuana to relax or be creative.
  • Choosing relationships or activities that co-exist with getting high.

Overcoming addiction to marijuana

Despite not being as physically addictive as other drugs, withdrawal symptoms have been documented in the cessation from marijuana use.  In managing a successful recovery from marijuana addiction, users are encouraged to seek counseling to understand the motivating factors of their addiction and to be better prepared in avoiding relapse.
