You Can’t Do It Alone

Prescription drug addiction is one of the fastest growing problems in the nation. Because of the pharmacological make-up of pain relievers, sleep aides, stimulants and sedatives, the potential for abuse and dependence is incredibly high. Many people become dependent on medications that were prescribed for a legitimate medical issue. Unfortunately, physicians often don’t adequately prepare patients for the consequences of daily consumption of powerful—and dangerously addictive—drugs.

As a result, many unwitting people find themselves experiencing increased tolerance, intense cravings, withdrawal symptoms and the eventual inability to distinguish between physical symptoms and psychological symptoms of pain or anxiety.

Symptoms of prescription drug addiction

Prescription drug addiction often elicits uncharacteristic behavior. Lying, appearing “out of it” and showing difficulty in daily tasks—these symptoms point to an accelerating problem that needs to be addressed with expert care. Few realize that prescription medications are typically stronger and more addictive than most street drugs. For example, Oxycontin, Percocet and Vicoden are essentially pharmaceutical-grade heroin. If someone continues to abuse prescription medications, they will eventually experience similar consequences as those addicted to street drugs, including legal trouble, lost friendships and severe cognitive impairment.

How we treat prescription drug addiction

At Alta Mira we understand the connection between legitimate physical issues, the need to take medications and the risk for dependence and abuse. We help our clients get free from the dependence by working with medical professionals to detoxify and manage withdrawal symptoms. Alta Mira uses the most current detox medications like Suboxone and Subutex to alleviate most of the severely uncomfortable symptoms associated with withdrawal. Patients receive physical, psychological and if necessary, psychiatric assessment to re-evaluate the need for medications.

A holistic approach

We also utilize a combination of holistic therapies including acupuncture, physical therapy, massage, bio-feedback, neuro-feedback, tai-chi and personal training to alleviate many of the physical symptoms. We then use our highly trained addiction medicine specialists to assist each client in determining which medications, if any, are necessary. In most cases, we are able to prescribe medications that have little or no abuse potential, and in numerous cases clients are able to leave treatment medication free.
