April Viewpoints Event Features AM Clinical Director Ben Eiland

We will be hosting the April installment of our Viewpoints Series, a monthly educational and networking luncheon held at Alta Mira. April’s luncheon will be taking place on Thursday, April 7, beginning at noon and ending at 1:30 pm.

Alta Mira’s Clinical Director Ben Eiland will be speaking on the topic of “The Enneagram: De-Pathologizing the Addicted Person.” Addicts and Alcoholics commonly enter treatment with what appears to be an Axis II Personality Disorder. Often what appears to be a personality disorder is a result of long term use of drugs, alcohol and trauma. The Enneagram is a typology made up of nine basic personality types designed to help people recognize and understand overall patterns in human behavior. The use of the Enneagram helps the individual understand their personality and leads to acceptance of self and can act as a relapse prevention tool. The Enneagram does not put people into boxes—it reveals the box and the way out.

Ben Eiland has been in the chemical dependency treatment field for over 35 years. Throughout his career he has had the privilege of being a director of both inpatient and outpatient chemical dependency treatment programs, for both adults and adolescents. He is the past director of substance abuse treatment services for the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic and was the co-founder of Integrated Counseling and Consulting Services, specializing in relapse prevention and domestic violence.

Ben has been a trainer and consultant in such areas as chemical dependency treatment, co-occurring disorders treatment, domestic and workplace violence. He has provided training and consulting for such diverse organizations as the American Indian Training Institute, Maui Social Services, the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Francisco Bar Association.

Ben has taught at a variety of educational institutions over the last 32 years and is currently an adjunct faculty member at JFK University in Orinda, and the College of San Mateo, where he teaches courses for individuals who are pursuing a career as a certified addiction counselor. He is currently on the board and is the President of the California Association of Alcohol/Drug Educators.
