Addiction & Mental Health Care for Veterans at Alta Mira
Our goal is to make high-quality, residential care accessible for veterans and their loved ones. By being in-network with TriWest, Alta Mira helps eligible veterans and their families streamline access to treatment, so recovery can start sooner and feel more manageable from day one.
At Alta Mira, we understand the culture of service, the strength it takes to ask for help, and the importance of caring for the whole family system. We pair sophisticated medical and psychiatric care with veteran-informed therapy, family programming, and a robust alumni community.
Why Veterans and Military Families Choose Alta Mira
In-Network with TriWest
Navigating benefits shouldn’t be a barrier. Being in-network with TriWest means our team can verify eligibility, coordinate approvals, and simplify admissions for veterans. We are also able to discuss other coverage options as needed.
A Whole-Family Approach
Substance use and co-occurring conditions ripple across relationships. Our Family Program brings loved ones into the recovery process through psychoeducation, therapist-guided communication, and a 3-Day Family immersion that fosters empathy, healthy boundaries, and a shared plan for life after residential care.
Lasting Support & Camaraderie
Recovery thrives in community. The Alta Mira Alumni Program offers free weekly groups, quarterly “Tune-Up” workshops, check-ins with our Alumni Coordinator, and a dedicated app to create the camaraderie many veterans value and miss after service.
Physical Wellness, Built In
For many veterans, staying active is part of daily life. Our program includes personal training and yoga to help reduce stress, build strength, and regulate the nervous system. When indicated, physical therapy can also be coordinated.
Care for Co-occurring Conditions
Many veterans seek help for PTSD, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, pain, and substance use—often at the same time. According to VA Health Services Research & Development, about 2.8 million U.S. veterans reported at least one substance use disorder in the prior year, underscoring the need for accessible, veteran-informed treatment pathways.
At Alta Mira, care integrates advanced diagnostics and psychiatry with evidence-based therapies, medication management, and holistic modalities in a highly individualized plan. Our goal is to treat the whole person and equip each client—and family—with practical tools for long-term recovery.
Expert, Veteran-Informed Leadership
Jeffrey Farber, MSW, LCSW – Associate Director of Clinical Services. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran and psychotherapist, Jeffrey uses an integrative, multi-modal approach to mood disorders and substance use—well-aligned with the needs of veterans and their families.
David Pennington, PhD – Director of Neuropsychological Assessment. Dr. Pennington trained at the San Francisco VA and later served as a funded investigator on NIH-, DoD-, and VA-supported research focused on behavioral interventions and cognitive recovery in substance-using populations. At Alta Mira, he leads a neuroscience-informed testing program that clarifies diagnosis and tailors care for complex co-occurring profiles common in military populations.
