Healing Trauma and Addiction: An Integrated Approach to Treating PTSD, C-PTSD, and Substance Use Disorders

At Alta Mira Recovery, we recognize the complex interplay between trauma, substance use disorders, and mental health conditions like trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). Our integrated approach to treating PTSD and other traumas addresses these interconnected challenges with a collaborative team of masters- and doctorate-level clinicians, medical professionals (including three board-certified psychiatrists), neuropsychological testing, evidence-based practices, and a commitment to comprehensive trauma-informed care.

Understanding the Nexus of Trauma and Addiction

Trauma often lies at the root of substance use disorders, as individuals may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions or numb painful memories caused by traumatic experiences. Likewise, substance abuse can exacerbate symptoms of trauma-related disorders, creating a cycle of self-destructive behaviors and psychological distress.

Treatment Philosophy

Our treatment philosophy is grounded in the understanding that true healing requires addressing the underlying issues driving addictive behaviors, including trauma and co-occurring mental health conditions. We take a collaborative approach to treatment, using all the clinical and medical professionals on our team, to address the complex needs of clients with trauma and substance use disorders.

Integrated Dual Diagnosis Care

Our multidisciplinary team is experienced in treating both trauma-related disorders and substance use disorders concurrently. Through integrated dual diagnosis care, we provide comprehensive neuropsychological and medical assessments, truly tailored treatment plans built with a robust range of interventions, and ongoing support to address the complex needs of each individual. Central to our approach is trauma-informed addiction treatment, and every clinical and medical team member is trained in trauma-informed care and modalities.

Evidence-Based Therapies

We offer three one-on-one therapy sessions per week, as well as a range of evidence-based therapies tailored to the unique needs of clients with co-occurring trauma and addiction. These modalities help clients develop coping skills, process traumatic memories, understand symptoms of PTSD, and learn healthier ways of managing emotions and cravings. Interventions may include:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Somatic Experiencing (SE)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma-focused psychotherapy

Experiential Therapies

In addition to traditional therapeutic approaches, we offer experiential therapies that engage clients in the healing process after experiencing traumatic events. These holistic modalities help each person reconnect with themselves, process emotions, and build resilience in recovery. Available modalities include:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation/Sound Bath
  • Expressive Arts
  • Equine-assisted therapy
  • Adventure therapy

Comprehensive Ongoing Care Planning

We understand that lasting recovery requires ongoing support beyond residential treatment. That’s why we prioritize comprehensive continuing care planning to help clients maintain their progress and continue their recovery journey. We provide resources, referrals, and ongoing support – including Alumni Meetings, Quarterly Tune-Ups, and our own CaredFor Alumni App – to help individuals transition back to their everyday lives with confidence and resilience.
