Treating Substance-Induced Psychosis

Comprehensive, medically driven care for individuals struggling with substance-induced psychosis.

Substance-induced psychosis is a condition that occurs as a result of drug use and can lead to distressing symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. At Alta Mira, we understand the unique challenges posed by substance-induced psychosis. Our team offers specialized psychiatric care designed to immediately focus on addressing these symptoms while simultaneously engaging clients in education and treatment for their substance use disorder.

Our Approach

Substance-Induced Psychosis has become increasingly prevalent due to the types, potency, and availability of drugs that can cause this condition. We understand that these symptoms are very distressing for clients and families and the key question on everyone’s mind is: “Will this go away once the drug has been stopped?” In most cases, thankfully, the answer is “Yes!” Time spent in our protected residential setting and close monitoring with immediate medication and adjustments to medication as needed are crucial for these symptoms to recede. In those cases where symptoms persist, ongoing clinical and psychiatric assessment combined with neuropsychological testing are crucial for ongoing care planning following discharge.

Advanced Diagnostics and Assessment

Upon admission each client meets with our Internal Medicine Physician within 24 hours and with one of our Board-Certified Addiction Medicine psychiatrists either simultaneously or shortly thereafter. Clients with Substance-Induced Psychosis are closely monitored for symptom status and response to medication and adjustments are made in “real time” through 24 hour per day nursing onsite who consult with our physicians as needed. Initial medical and psychiatric assessments are followed by neuropsychological testing and this, combined with observations from the clinical team, result in as clear a picture as can be achieved during the early recovery process. Family history and previous treatment records are extremely helpful in these cases and outreach to obtain this information begins upon or even prior to admission.

Medically Managed Detoxification

For individuals struggling with substance use and substance-induced psychosis, detoxification is often one of the first steps towards recovery. We offer medically managed detoxification services to help clients safely withdraw from drugs or alcohol under the 24/7 supervision of experienced nurses and medical providers. Our detoxification protocols are designed to minimize discomfort and ensure the safety and well-being of our clients throughout the process.

Therapeutic Interventions

In addition to psychiatric assessment, medication and care, our therapeutic program plays an essential role in the treatment of substance-induced psychosis. Our therapists utilize evidence-based modalities such as:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma modalities
  • And more

Through individual and group therapy within a supportive environment of peers and staff, clients learn tools and coping skills to assist in understanding and managing symptoms as we assist them in developing insight into the relationship between drug use and psychosis, as well as the importance of staying abstinent to prevent it from recurring.

Continuing Care Planning

Both Substance Use Disorders and Substance-Induced Psychosis are conditions that respond to treatment and can be placed in remission to enable individuals to live long and healthy lives. Treatment in a residential setting is the first step, not the only one, in a longer-term journey that is followed by ongoing treatment and support in an outpatient setting with a goal of reaching a “maintenance plan” that fits into each individual’s lifestyle and goals for the future. We work closely with clients to develop comprehensive continuing care plans that address their unique strengths and challenges.

Continuing care plans may include:

  • Consultation with and referral back to external care providers
  • Ongoing professional support through a Partial Hospitalization (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  • Individual and group therapy (either within or in addition to a PHP/IOP
  • Family therapy or coaching
  • Recovery or life coaching
  • Case management
  • Medication management
  • Peer support fellowship involvement
