Amy Russo, MS, LMFT

Therapist

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) who is deeply committed to helping people feel seen, supported and empowered in their healing. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Arizona State University, graduating summa cum laude and my Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy from Pepperdine University where I graduated magna cum laude.

I have extensive experience working with co-occurring disorders including substance use, depression, anxiety, PTSD, bi-polar and schizophrenia. My background also includes forensic and correctional psychology where I developed a strong understanding of the legal system as it relates to substance use as well as expertise in crisis intervention while supporting diverse populations within structured care settings.

Prior to joining Alta Mira, I worked in intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization (PHP) settings, providing structured, high-level mental health care for individuals with acute and complex needs. In this role, I facilitated daily therapy groups, provided individual and family therapy, conducted risk and safety assessments, and collaborated closely with multidisciplinary teams to support stabilization and ongoing recovery. I helped clients build coping skills, improve emotional regulation, and navigate transitions to lower levels of care, all within a supportive and structured therapeutic environment.

Additionally, I have facilitated trauma-focused groups using the Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) model, an evidenced-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder and related conditions. My work is further informed by an Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) framework, integrating neuroscience, attachment theory, and systems theory to support holistic and relational healing.

My approach to therapy is collaborative, down-to-earth and rooted in evidenced based practices. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and I am skilled in Motivational Interviewing (MI). I draw from humanistic and client-centered approaches. I believe that the most meaningful healing happens within a trusting, genuine and collaborative relationship. I prioritize creating a space where clients feel safe enough to be honest, explore, and grow through an empathetic and authentic connection.

Prior to my career as a therapist, I spent 14 years working in a pediatric hospital as a Child Life Assistant. In that role, I helped children and families navigate the stress of hospitalization by reducing trauma, supporting development and easing anxiety – an experience that continues to inform my compassionate, grounded approach to care.

I believe deeply that people are capable of more than just “getting through” life. I am passionate about helping clients move from surviving to truly thriving. I am someone that will sit with you in the hard moments while also helping build practical, lasting tools to create real change.
